I loved Toby and Filippo, loved the island of Hvar and the people。 Kate finds that she's not the disaster she thought, she does have talent and discovers a field she enjoys and is good at。 I loved her personal growth, her build up of self belief, the way she was able to look back and see she wasn't the person her ex portrayed。 Of course she meets someone new。 The gorgeous Alex, who's not without his own problems。 I did find the coincidence of their meeting and what she knew a tiny bit hard to believe。。。。but its book-land! I also found that once there she was able to let go of the past 8 years with her ex pretty quickly。 I didn't want her to wallow but I did feel she moved on faster than I expected。 Maybe that's just book timing, its set over a short period but for me I was a little surprised。 There's fabulous descriptions of life on the island, great characters, and lots of twists in the story, some of which had me cheering and yet tearful too。 I enjoyed reading this story, it didn't keep me gripped to the page, I did read over a few periods, but that's me not the book。 Stars: Three, great holiday read, sweet romance, and great portrayal of personal growthARC supplied by Netgalley and publishers 。。。more

No wonder Kate wants to get away。 She’s lost yet another job and been public humiliated at her 30th birthday party where a surprise proposal doesn’t quite go to plan。 To make matters worse, a video of the event goes viral, and she ends up with no boyfriend, no job and no home。 I’d want to get away too!Isabelle Broom effortlessly transports the reader to beautiful Croatia。 I’ve never been。 I now want to go。 If that gorgeous cover wasn’t enough to tempt me, Isabelle Broome’s wonderfully evocative No wonder Kate wants to get away。 She’s lost yet another job and been public humiliated at her 30th birthday party where a surprise proposal doesn’t quite go to plan。 To make matters worse, a video of the event goes viral, and she ends up with no boyfriend, no job and no home。 I’d want to get away too!Isabelle Broom effortlessly transports the reader to beautiful Croatia。 I’ve never been。 I now want to go。 If that gorgeous cover wasn’t enough to tempt me, Isabelle Broome’s wonderfully evocative writing certainly does! Kate’s brother Toby and his husband Filippo live in Hvar and she helps them get their hostel ready for opening, discovering a flair for interior design as she does。Kate feels such a failure at the beginning of this book。 This add to the intrigue as you read。 Why does she feel that she can never do anything right? What is the secret that Kate told James that she hopes he’ll never reveal? What made James change his mind about their seemingly perfect relationship? After the humiliation of the #wannabewife video and seeing how hurt and small Kate felt, it was lovely to read about her learning to love herself and find her passion in life。 That passion didn’t just involve design but also a certain tradesman called Alex。 He was also a bit of a man of mystery, living off radar on his boat in Croatia。 I’m not going to tell you much about Alex as that would spoil the story but I will say I think I was a little bit in love with him myself! Is this my new favourite Isabelle Broom novel? It could well be。 I highly recommend that with exotic getaways looking unlikely again this summer for most of us, you treat yourself to a copy of The Getaway。 It’s gorgeously romantic, beautifully written, full of passion and intrigue and the perfect escapist read for summer。 。。。more

I have never disliked any of Isabelle Broom’s books and I was eagerly waiting for this one to hit my door mat。 For those of you not familiar with Isabelle’s writing, her stories are like mini travel guides – you will need your phone to hand as you read her books as you will have an itching desire to Google the various places she mentions。 This one was no different。 When Kate’s life goes a bit pear-shaped, she is inspired by an article she reads in a trashy magazine to just take herself away for I have never disliked any of Isabelle Broom’s books and I was eagerly waiting for this one to hit my door mat。 For those of you not familiar with Isabelle’s writing, her stories are like mini travel guides – you will need your phone to hand as you read her books as you will have an itching desire to Google the various places she mentions。 This one was no different。 When Kate’s life goes a bit pear-shaped, she is inspired by an article she reads in a trashy magazine to just take herself away for a few weeks to make someone miss her。 What she doesn’t expect is that in doing so, she finds the real her。 Set in Hvar, Croatia, this book has sun, sea and cocktails galore and is a glorious book to read on a summery day – especially when you’re suffering from a severe bout of Wanderlust! I was transported to the dusty coast paths, I could hear to gorgeous blue sea, I could feel the sun on my skin…。actually, I could feel the actual sun on my skin but, still! Despite various outlets commenting disparagingly about ‘wimmin’s fiction’ in recent weeks, you really cant beat a good read from this genre。 The stories are gritty and tackle real life issues – in this instance it tackles friendship, humiliation, anxiety, loss, depression, being ‘lost’, finding yourself again。 Yes, there is an element of romance in most books in this genre, but the overarching theme is the sense of community, family, support and acceptance and there’s a lot to be said about that。 This book is the perfect antidote to every day life – especially in the middle of a plague。 Is it insulting to call it an easy read? I hope not – because, in my experience, books that are easy reads and ‘unputdownable’ and offer you an escape from everyday life are very difficult to write well – and that’s exactly what Isabelle does with this book。 This would be perfect to slip into your bag to enjoy on your UK Staycation this year as well as being the perfect book to read during the long, dark winter nights when you are longing to feel the heat of the sun。 Some of the comment Alex makes to Kate about being alone but not lonely and about material objects really resonated with me and made me think。Another FAB read from Isabelle……now hurry up and write the next one! 。。。more

Kate’s life is a mess。It’s no exaggeration to say I inhaled The Getaway greedily, putting life on hold until I had savoured every word。 I adored it and could simply not tear myself away。 The Getaway has everything for the most wonderful immersive, escapist read。 Certainly it fits its genre to perfection and I was expecting romance and a positive resolution, but Isabelle Broom writes with such grace and beauty that there is an added dimension of enjoyment that is so satisfying。 Her descriptions o Kate’s life is a mess。It’s no exaggeration to say I inhaled The Getaway greedily, putting life on hold until I had savoured every word。 I adored it and could simply not tear myself away。 The Getaway has everything for the most wonderful immersive, escapist read。 Certainly it fits its genre to perfection and I was expecting romance and a positive resolution, but Isabelle Broom writes with such grace and beauty that there is an added dimension of enjoyment that is so satisfying。 Her descriptions of places are perfect。 Having been to Hvar I recognised some of the settings because they are so vividly and accurately described。 Reading The Getaway is a true feast for the senses with everything from the sound of cicadas, to the sight of salt crystals on eyelashes, so that it feels like being plunged into the most idyllic world。Aside from the accurate and evocative descriptions, however, there are wonderful, rounded characters who garner strong reactions in the reader。 With a relatively small cast, I felt I got to know the people of The Getaway intimately, especially Kate and Alex, to the extent that their experiences, emotions and actions felt as convincing to me as if they were my own。 I can’t imagine any reader not recognising at least one of Kate’s traits, desires or hurts and empathising with them。 As an aside, I loved too the fact that she wears glasses。 So few heroines are presented this way so that she felt all the more tangible to me。As might be expected, from Isabelle Broom, relationships form the backbone of the plot, with familial, romantic and business partnerships presented fully。 I adored watching the relationship between Kate and Alex unfold because not only was it romantic, it felt utterly believable。 At one point I thought I was going to have to climb into The Getaway and perform a somewhat unpleasant physical action upon James! However, wonderful settings, fabulous, entertaining, romantic plot and vivid characters aside, The Getaway is so much more。 It’s difficult to say much about themes without spoiling the story, but The Getaway illustrates how we are affected by others, how our lives are what we make of them, how we cannot expect others to define us and how we shouldn’t just accept it when they do。 Isabelle Broom explores identity, secrets, self-confidence and mental health in a subtle, clever and sensitively constructed manner so that not only did I want to hold and comfort her characters, I felt the need to give the author a hug too。 The Getaway thrums with humanity and understanding in a manner I found extremely affecting。I’ve thought hard about how to sum up The Getaway but it is, quite simply, gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous。 I loved The Getaway unreservedly and it’s one of my favourite reads this year。 Don’t miss it。 。。。more

On the night of her 30th birthday Kate makes the biggest mistake of her life: she proposes to James, her long-time, live-in boyfriend with whom she is madly in love。 It would be an understatement to say it didn’t go well, but it was so obvious that James was not singing from the same hymn sheet as Kate。 They break up, he wants no further contact with her and Kate is heartbroken。 But even worse than that, the video of her ill-timed proposal goes viral。 It becomes an internet sensation, escalating On the night of her 30th birthday Kate makes the biggest mistake of her life: she proposes to James, her long-time, live-in boyfriend with whom she is madly in love。 It would be an understatement to say it didn’t go well, but it was so obvious that James was not singing from the same hymn sheet as Kate。 They break up, he wants no further contact with her and Kate is heartbroken。 But even worse than that, the video of her ill-timed proposal goes viral。 It becomes an internet sensation, escalating by thousands and thousands of viewings as the days go by。 She feels totally humiliated and decides to put distance between herself and James, in fact distance between her and everyone in the UK。Kate has a brother called Toby living in Croatia。 He and his husband called Filippo are working hard to finish off their brand new hostel called Sul Tetto in the seaside resort of Hvar。 She flees there where nobody will know what has happened to her, offering her services to help with the decorating in return for a room to sleep in。 She has an excellent eye for design and soon gets cracking, leaving Toby, Filippo and their hired handyman Alex to do the carpentry, painting and setting up of the dormitories and private rooms。 She is glad of the work, it takes her mind off James, but she cannot help being tearful and unhappy。 Gradually the hotel is brought alive with salvaged and natural items, set artfully around the hostel and all gathered by Kate。 She is so talented and her work is widely admired。 She even gets the offer of commissions。Alex is very quiet but as they work together they build a unique friendship based on trust and the happy times they share。 Alex offers to take her sightseeing, listening patiently while she opens her heart about her broken romance。 She tells him that she hopes James will be missing her, realise he has made a mistake and change his mind。 She dreams of reconciliation, reunion, a deepening love and a baby cementing their bond。 Alex is totally not her type: he has dreadlocks, an untidy beard and wears tatty clothes。 His home is on his old, battered boat, and he relies on picking up work by word of mouth。 Alex is secretive about his past and does not open up to her。 He sometimes goes missing without any warning。 He is unattractive to Kate, but gradually her feelings change。 She loves his personality, the way he encourages her, his loyalty and his kind nature。 James or Alex, Alex or James? Still James is the winner by far。 He is such a hardworking guy and they have been together for years。 She loves him so much and has struggled with her loss since they broke up。Then her best friend comes to spend a week full of sunshine and sightseeing, swimming and sunbathing and most of all for her catch up with Kate。 But what happens next is not at all what Kate wanted or could even imagine happening。 What will she do?I thought this novel was a really good read。 The story telling was beautiful, the storyboard was full of interest, twisty, exciting and very well handled。 I never once suspected that the finale would end as it did。 I liked the carefully crafted and developed characters, the exotic island descriptions and the range of emotions the story evoked。 The choice of themes was also varied and contemporary, with issues of emotional abuse, fertility, mental health problems and so much more。 I received a complimentary copy from publisher Hodder through my membership of NetGalley and with the promise of a review。 Thank you so much for my copy。 These are my own honest opinions without any outside influences。 It is a well-deserved 4。5* review from me。 It is a perfect holiday read。 。。。more

I’d heard so many good thinks about The Getaway, the new novel form Isabelle Broom。 It’s set in beautiful Croatia and although I’ve never visited there before it’s certainly whetted my appetite to explore there。 It’s Kate’s thirtieth birthday party and something goes wrong。 Something of monumental proportions。 Kate needs to get away so disappears to Croatia。 Surely endless blue skies and the gorgeous sea will help her take stock of her life。 No one on the island of Hvar knows her or why she’s th I’d heard so many good thinks about The Getaway, the new novel form Isabelle Broom。 It’s set in beautiful Croatia and although I’ve never visited there before it’s certainly whetted my appetite to explore there。 It’s Kate’s thirtieth birthday party and something goes wrong。 Something of monumental proportions。 Kate needs to get away so disappears to Croatia。 Surely endless blue skies and the gorgeous sea will help her take stock of her life。 No one on the island of Hvar knows her or why she’s there。 Until she meets Alex。 He’s another lonely soul yet Kate feels instantly drawn to him。 This book is beautifully written and certainly takes you through all of the emotions。 Kate is such a lovely character and the depth of description about the island, food and scenery almost transports you directly there。 A fabulous five star read。 Thank you to NetGalley, Hodder and Stoughton and the author for the chance to review。 。。。more

Reading ‘The Getaway’ is a one-way ticket to sunshine and romance, the story of two people finding each other and – in doing so – learning how to live。 Uplifting, funny and full of heart, Kate and Alex’s story is as addictive as sunset cocktails, full of characters you want to meet and settings that make you want to jump on the next plane to Croatia。 It is compelling, beautiful and wholeheartedly romantic。 I loved it。

We all love a party but no one would wish for the 30th birthday bash that Kate experienced。 The love of her life James wasnt expecting a surprise of his own either that leads to insecure Kate feeling humiliation and heart broken。 This delightful story then takes us to Hvar in Croatia which is so beautifully described that it left me wanting to be there right now。 Kates brother Toby and his husband Filippo are just the tonic and distraction Kate needs, as is the renovation project of their hostel We all love a party but no one would wish for the 30th birthday bash that Kate experienced。 The love of her life James wasnt expecting a surprise of his own either that leads to insecure Kate feeling humiliation and heart broken。 This delightful story then takes us to Hvar in Croatia which is so beautifully described that it left me wanting to be there right now。 Kates brother Toby and his husband Filippo are just the tonic and distraction Kate needs, as is the renovation project of their hostel Sul Tetto。 Kate is introduced to Alex, another Brit who does odd jobs for them。 Alex appears to be a complex character who leads a very simple private life but the spark between him and Kate is evident to all except Kate who still pines after her ex。A fabulous summery read that had me almost feeling the sand between my toes。My thanks to Net Galley for the ARC。 。。。more

I would like to thank NetGalley, Hodder & Stoughton and Isabelle Broom for this e arc for review。This is the story of Kate who at her 30th birthday party decides to propose to her boyfriend James, and although he doesn’t say no, he doesn’t say yes either。 He later tells her that he thinks there relationship is not going anywhere。 Feeling dejected and humilitated as a video of the failed proposal has gone on the internet she decides to have a break from it all。 She decides to go to Croatia to hel I would like to thank NetGalley, Hodder & Stoughton and Isabelle Broom for this e arc for review。This is the story of Kate who at her 30th birthday party decides to propose to her boyfriend James, and although he doesn’t say no, he doesn’t say yes either。 He later tells her that he thinks there relationship is not going anywhere。 Feeling dejected and humilitated as a video of the failed proposal has gone on the internet she decides to have a break from it all。 She decides to go to Croatia to help her brother who is about to open a hostel there。 Whilst in Croatia, Kate heals from the broken relationship, finds her passion for interior design which whilst helping her brother has found she is really quite good at。 She also finds love with the handyman Alex。 This book deals with both mental health and fertility issues and I felt both were handled very well。 This book also made me want to go and visit Croatia。I would highly recommend this book。 。。。more

Kate goes to Hvar in Croatia to 'Getway' from an embarrassing situation。There she finds herself again and finds a new found joy in upcycling and interior design。Wow this truly was a magical read I devoured this beauty in less than 24 hours。This makes you realise that you can be bold be brave and never let anything stand in your way of what you want to achieve in life。Alex was a total joy and just a go with the flow guy and that opposites attract。If you need a perfect escapism read then this is f Kate goes to Hvar in Croatia to 'Getway' from an embarrassing situation。There she finds herself again and finds a new found joy in upcycling and interior design。Wow this truly was a magical read I devoured this beauty in less than 24 hours。This makes you realise that you can be bold be brave and never let anything stand in your way of what you want to achieve in life。Alex was a total joy and just a go with the flow guy and that opposites attract。If you need a perfect escapism read then this is for you! What a perfect getaway read this is。After a very embarrassing moment right at the start of the book, poor Kate escapes from going viral on twitter after losing everything。Croatia is perhaps an unlikely setting but one full of colour (exceeded with Kate's eye for interior design) and the perfect escape。A very unusual meet cute (no spoilers) and lots of crazy moments follow as she gets to know the area and the people in it much closer。I really liked the sub-plot which weaves in and out of the book What a perfect getaway read this is。After a very embarrassing moment right at the start of the book, poor Kate escapes from going viral on twitter after losing everything。Croatia is perhaps an unlikely setting but one full of colour (exceeded with Kate's eye for interior design) and the perfect escape。A very unusual meet cute (no spoilers) and lots of crazy moments follow as she gets to know the area and the people in it much closer。I really liked the sub-plot which weaves in and out of the book。 I like how this shows the good and bad sides to social media too。Packed with giggles, cringes, and heart ache- be prepared to recognise yourself if you are a 30 something woman。Escapism at its finest。 。。。more
